Two opposing political factions arose in Mexico at this time: the Federalists, who supported a constitutional democracy; and the Centralists, who supported an autocratic government under a monarch or dictator. Various clashing parties of Centralists were in control of the government from 1835 to December 1844. During that time numerous rebellions and insurgencies occurred within Mexican territory. In December 1844 a coalition of moderates and Federalists forced Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna into exile and made Jose Joaquin Herrera acting president of Mexico. Centralists who had supported Santa Anna began planning the overthrow of Herrera. Underneath this internal political conflict was varying sentiment about the United States. The Federalists did not like the United States but were eager to avoid a war. The Centralists, however, were extremely anti-United States and felt threatened by U.S. expansion but were eager to go to war.
