May is making bracelets. She has A piece of string that is 12 1/4 inches long. She gets off a piece that is 8 3/4 inches long. How much string that she have left?

Total length of the string May is having initially =
12(1)/(4) inches or
(49)/(4) inches

If she gets off a piece that measures =
8(3)/(4) inches or
(35)/(4) inches

So length of the string she is left with = Total length of the string - length of the piece taken off

=
(49)/(4)-(35)/(4)

=
(49-35)/(4)

=
(14)/(4) inches


(7)/(2) inches


3(1)/(2) inches

Therefore, the length of remaining string will measure
3(1)/(2) inches.
