The x- coordinate of the vertex is calculated as

x = -
(b)/(2a)

g(x) = x² + 4x

with a = 1, b = 4 , then

x = -
(4)/(2) = - 2

Substitute x = - 2 into g(x) for corresponding y- coordinate

g(- 2) = (- 2)² + 4(- 2) = 4 - 8 = - 4
