sarah has a stack of 8 plates, each plate is 0.5 inches tall and she is trying to wrap them as a gift. If each plate has a diameter of 10 inches, what is the approximate amount of wrapping paper she will need to cover the plates

Explanation:

Stacking 8 plates with height of each being 0.5 inch will form a cylinder with height 4 inches.

The radius of the cylinder is half the diameter


r = (10)/(2) = 5in

The total surface area of this cylinder is:


= 2\pi \: r(r + h)

We substitute the values to get:


= 2 * \pi \: * 5(5+ 4) \\ = 10 * 9\pi \\ = 90\pi \\ = 282.6 {in}^(2)

She will need approximately 283 square inches of wrapping
