Explain the function of the nervous system

Answer:

The structural components of the nervous system enables it to carry out the following functions:

1). collect information about changes in the organism's environment (both internal and external).

2). process the information; and

3). act up on the information.

The nervous system carries out its functions efficiently and extremely rapidly since information and instructions speed as electric impulses along nerve from one part of the body to another almost instantaneously.

The basic structural unit of the nervous system is the nerve cell or neurone which consists of a dense cell body and protoplasmic processes collectively known as nerve fibre.
