In 22 minutes, a conveyor belt moves 600600 pounds of recyclable aluminum from the delivery truck to a storage area. A smaller belt moves the same quantity of cans the same distance in 88 minutes. If both belts are used, find how long it takes to move the cans to the storage area.

Answer:

1.6 minutes = 1 minute and 36 seconds

Explanation:

(Assuming that the correct values are 2 minutes, 600 pounds and 8 minutes)

The first belt can move 600 pounds of material in 2 minutes, so it can move 300 pounds per minute

The smaller belt can move the same 600 pounds the same distance in 8 minutes, so it can move 75 pounds per minute.

If we use them together, they can move 300+75 = 375 pounds of material per minute.

If we want to move 600 pounds of material, we can solve that using rule of three:

375 pounds -> 1 minute

600 pounds -> x minutes

375/600 = 1/x

x = 600/375 = 1.6 minutes = 1 minute and 36 seconds
