All vertebrates have bilateral symmetry and a true coelom. At the base of the phylogenetic tree, neither sponges nor cnidarians have a coelom. Sponges have an asymmetric body plan; cnidarians have radial symmetric plan. What advantages do the bilateral symmetry and the coelom give to animals?

The Bilateral symmetry represents an equal vertical arrangement around a vertical plane as seen in animals. A bilateral symmetry divides an animal into equal left and right portions.

The presence of coelom allows for the freedom of movement within the internal organs independent of the external body wall. also the coelom protects the internal organs of the animals ( i.e acts as a protective cushion ).
