One of your clerks has to travel from Buffalo to Albany, a distance of about 360 miles. You decide to send him by boat over the Erie Canal. He will travel at 6 miles an hour and the cost will be 2 cents a mile. How many hours will the trip take? How much will it cost?

The time taken is 60 hours and travel cost is $7.20

Explanation:

  • Step 1: Calculate the time taken to travel to Albany

Total distance = 360 miles

Speed = 6 mph

Time taken = Distance/Speed = 360/6 = 60 hours

  • Step 2: Calculate the cost of the trip.

Cost of trip for each mile = 2 cents

Cost of trip for 360 miles = 360 × 2 = 720 cents = $7.20 (∵ 1$ = 100 cents)
