Although Olympic Games were held to honor the Gods, they also had larger significance for the politics. During the Olympics it was forbidden to wage wars, and people who participate and won the games were celebrated as heroes. Through Olympic Games some countries were even strengthening their position in the Greek world, created allies, etc.

Needless to say that the first Olympics were held in 776 BC. That is important to stress out because most of the Greek city-states didn't exist back then. Additionally, Olympic games were one of the longest traditions in the Greek world, as they were abolished in 4th Century AD by Emperor Theodosius.
