Answer: according to Jung, all progress and development (both individual and collective) depends on disponibility of psychic energy. All human progress is a question of quantity of psychic energy available ...it applies to technology, science, social structures, organization etc etc. If there is a psychic energy available, development is possible. Like that psychic energy can be invested in outer world activities. Development = increase of consciousness.

Explanation: Adam and Eve in garden Eden are unconscious. Committing sin of eating the fruit they are expulsed from paradise and thus recognize the good and the bad. The whole story shifts from one stage of consciousness (Eden = unconscious state) to another one (consciousness = differentiation between good and evil). Progress = when we pull from one stage to another one. This pulling usually symbolizes increase of consciousness (individually or collectively).
