I think of a number and add one fourth of it to half of it and the result is twelve. What is the number I thought of?

Suppose that the number u were thinking about is x thus :

`(1)/(4) x + (1)/(2) x = 12 \\`

Multiply both sides by 4

`4 * ( (1)/(4) x + (1)/(2) x) = 4 * 12 \\`

`x + 2x = 48`

`3x = 48`

Divide both sides by 3

`(3x)/(3) = (48)/(3 ) \\`

`x = 16`
