you tell yourslef what multiplies to -8 and also adds up to -7?

the rule is always what multiplies to the last number but also adds to the middle number. you also have to look at the sign.

-8 and 1 multplies to -8 and adds up to -7.

now you draw two parenthesis and include one x in each.

(x )(x )

you now put the two numbers, -8 and 1 into the parenthesis.

(x-8)(x+1)

to check if your right you just distribute between the parenthesis using FOIL.

x times x, x times 1, -8 times x, -8 times 1.

add like terms and you will get the same answer.
