It's your birthday, and to celebrate you're going to make your first bungee jump. You stand on a bridge 110 m above a raging river and attach a 35-m-long bungee cord to your harness. A bungee cord, for practical purposes, is just a long spring, and this cord has a spring constant of 44 N/m . Assume that your mass is 77 kg . After a long hesitation, you dive off the bridge.How far are you above the water when the cord reaches its maximum elongation? h=

Answer: 57.85m above the water

Step-by-step explanation:

The height is 110m

the initial lenght of the cord is 35m

the spring constant is 44N/m

your mass is 77kg, so your weight is W = 77kg*9.8m/s^2 = 754.6N

So the force that the spring needs to do to cancelate this weight, is

x*44N/m = 756.6N

x = (756.6/44)m = 17.15m

So, at this point, the total elongation of the spring is:

35m + 17.15m = 52.15m

then the distance to the water is:

d = 110m - 52.15m = 57.85m
