The standard Ar value of each element is the average relative atomic mass, which takes all isotopes of each element into account. The mass of a molecule is called the relative formula mass (Mr). This is calculated by adding up the relative atomic mass and then add these together.

Relative formula masses can be calculated and used in conservation of mass calculations. Calculations can be carried out to find out concentrations of solution and uncertainties in measurements.
