x+y = 8 -----eq 1

5x+4.50y = 37 ------ eq 2

or, 10x+9y = 74 [ multyplying eq 2 by 2]

Putting x = 8-y from eq 1 into eq 2 we get,

10(8-y)+9y = 74

or, 80-10y+9y = 74

or, -y = 74-80

or, -y = -6

or, y = 6

From eq 1 we get,

x = 8-6 = 2

She bought 2 books and 6 magazines.
