Based on the last paragraph of the excerpt, what is likely to happen next in the story?

He was trapped. The ground had suddenly given way, and Ryan found himself in a muddy pit, fifteen feet deep. For a minute or so, as his eyes adjusted themselves to the darkness of the pit, his breaths came in short, panic-stricken gasps. His attempts to climb out of the pit were short-lived, and he let himself slump to the dirty ground. “I shouldn’t have eaten those mushrooms," he thought. "This is what happens when I go out without telling the wardens." They won't even be able to hear his calls this far into the forest. The trees were quiet, the only sounds were those of the crickets, celebrating their freedom, but Ryan knew that the forest wasn’t safe at night.

He had lain still for perhaps an hour or more, when he first became conscious of the sound of rustling grass. He heard an animal snuffling the ground around the mouth of the pit. He froze for a moment, then started wildly hunting around for anything that could be used as a weapon.

Just as he found a root the length of his arm, he heard a deep, chilling growl that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand straight.

A:Ryan lies down to rest.

B:Ryan calls the wardens for help.

C:Ryan decides to go home.

D:Ryan is attacked by the beast.

Answer:

D

Step-by-step explanation:

There is suspense throughout this passage and this foreshadows the arrival of something. A growl suggests a beast. The statement "Ryan knew the forest wasn't safe at night" only further proves the answer is D.

Hope this helps!
