If we take a look at your question, a simple way to solve this equation would to set this problem up as en exponential problem
3^(6) which can also be seen as 3^6 (^ is known as a carrot on the calculator).

3^6 means that 3 will be multiplied to itself six times: 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3

This is the long multiplication version of your problem:

3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 =

9 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 =

27 x 3 x 3 x 3 =

81 x 3 x 3 =

243 x 3 = 729 mice

So by the time the 6th month comes around, there will be a basement full of 729 mice
