A 5 - kg blob of putty is dropped from a height of 10.0 m above the ground onto a light vertical spring the top of which is 5 m above the ground. If the spring constant k = 200 N/m and the blob compresses the spring by 1.50 m, then find the amount of energy lost in sound and thermal energy. a. 20 J b. 0.17 kj c. 0.27 kj d. 0.43 kj e. 94 J

Answer:

Heat loss in this process is given as 93.8 J

Step-by-step explanation:

As we know that the initial total energy of the blob is in the form of gravitational potential energy

So initial total energy is given as

U_i = mgh

U_i = 5(9.81)(10)

U_i = 490.5 J

Final total energy of the blob + spring is given as

U_f = mgh' + (1)/(2)kx^2

now we have

U_f = 5(9.81)(5 - 1.50) + (1)/(2)(200)(1.5^2)

U_f = 397 J

Heat = U_i - U_f

heat = 490.5 - 397

heat = 93.8 J
