Answer: 2.8 and -0.844

Explanation:

This is a quadratic equation and would require we solve it with any methods used to solve quadratic equations

1. Factorization

2. Formula method

3. Completing the squares.

5x² - 10x - 12 = 0

Using formula method,

x = [-b ± √(b2 - 4ac)]/2a,

a = 5, b = -10, c = -12

y = -(-10) ± √((-10)² - 4*5*(-12))]/2*5,

y = [10 ± √(100 + 240)]/10,

y = (10 ± 18.44) / 10

y = (10 + 18.44) / 10 = 2.8

Or,

y = (10 - 18.44) / 10 = -0.844

y = 2.8 or -0.844
