Answer:

x=-1/3

y=2/3

Explanation:

16x + 5y = -2 Equation 1

4x - y=-2 Equation 2

This is simultaneous equation, it can be solved using either Elimination method or substitution method. But for the purpose of this question, we would be using elimination Method.

Multiply equation 2 by 5, the coefficient of y in equation 1. So that y can have the same coefficient, and then it will be eliminated.

5(4x - y=-2)

20x-5y=-10 Equation 3

We therefore have

16x + 5y = -2 Equation 1

20x-5y=-10 Equation 3

We add equation 1 and equation 3 to eliminate y

16x+20x=36x

5y+(-5y)=0

-2+(-10)=-2-10=-12

36x=-12

x=-12/36

x=-1/3

Substitute x for -1/3 in equation 2

4x-y=-2

4(-1/3)-y=-2

-4/3-y=-2

-4/3+2=y

(-4+6)/3=y

2/3=y
