Answer:

2/12 or 1/6

Explanation:

to subtract or to add you need to see if the two fraction have common denominator. In this case there is no common denominator.

since 5/12 as a denominator of 12

and 1/4 has 4 as denominator which is multiple of 12

THE COMMON DENOMINATOR IS 12

to get from 4 to 12 you multiply 4 by 3

4 times 3 = 12

if you do one thing on the denominator, then you should also do it to the numerator.

1/4 times 3/3= 3/12

now you could subtract 5/12 and 3/12

5/12-3/12= 2/12 or 1/6

(5)/(12) - (1)/(4) ( * )/( * ) (3)/( 3 ) \\ (5)/(12) - (3)/(12) \\ = (2)/(12) = (1)/(6)
