The bat fit diagonally across the bottom of the suitcase.

Solution:

Length of the suitcase = 20.5 inches

Width of the suitcase = 29 inches

Using Pythagorean theorem,

20.5^(2)+29^(2)=d^(2)

420.25+841=d^(2)

1261.25=d^(2)

Taking square root on both sides, we get

35.5 \approx d

Diagonal of the suitcase = 35.5 inch

Length of the base ball bat = 33 inch

35.5 > 33

Since the diagonal of the suitcase is greater than length of the baseball bat,

The bat fit diagonally across the bottom of the suitcase.
