Religons and belief of higher beings give people a sense of comfort and hope, so they created these myths to better their everyday lives and give themselves a purpose. Adding to that, if you look at old myths like King Minos or Oedipus Rex, they all have overarching morals to teach Greek civilians how to lead a life according to the gods' desires and plans.
