Amber plans to cook a turkey and macaroni and cheese for a special dinner. Since

she will need to use the oven for both dishes and they won't both fit in the oven
at the same time she has to determine how much time all the cooking will take.
The macaroni and cheese will take a set amount of time, while the turkey takes a
certain number of minutes per pound that the turkey weighs.

Final answer:

To determine the total cooking time for both the turkey and macaroni and cheese, add the cooking time of each dish. Multiply the weight of the turkey by the cooking time per pound to determine the turkey's cooking time. Finally, add the cooking time of the macaroni and cheese to the turkey's cooking time.

Step-by-step explanation:

To determine the total cooking time for both the turkey and macaroni and cheese, we need to add the individual cooking times for each dish. Since the macaroni and cheese has a set cooking time, we can calculate the total time by adding the cooking time of the macaroni and cheese to the cooking time of the turkey.

Let's say the macaroni and cheese takes 30 minutes to cook. Now, for the turkey, we need to know the weight of the turkey and the cooking time per pound. Let's say the turkey weighs 10 pounds and takes 15 minutes per pound to cook.

To calculate the cooking time for the turkey, we multiply the weight of the turkey (10 pounds) by the cooking time per pound (15 minutes) to get 150 minutes. Finally, we add the cooking time of the macaroni and cheese (30 minutes) to the cooking time of the turkey (150 minutes) to get a total cooking time of 180 minutes.

:

a. what do variables x and y represent? use the phrase ‘is a function of’ to describe how the two quantities relate to each other.

answer: y is a function of the total cooking times Amber will need to prepare her dishes. x is a function of the certain number of minutes it will take to cook the turkey per pound.

b. what does the value 40 represent?

answer: how long the mac and cheese will cook

c. what does the rate of change represent?

answer: for every pound that the turkey weighs, you would have to cook it for 15 minutes

d. what is the total cooking time for just the turkey if it weighs 12 pounds? how do you know?

answer:

y = 15x + 40

y = 15(12) + 40

y = 180 + 40

y = 210 minutes
