Let number of apples = x

And number of oranges = y

Total number of apples & oranges combined ( x + y ) = 10

⇒ x + y = 10 ---------- ( 1 )

Number of apples = 4 + Number of oranges

⇒ x = 4 + y ----------- ( 2 )

Put the value of x in equation ( 1 ) we get,

⇒ 4 + 2 y = 10

⇒ 2 y = 6

⇒ y = 3

This is the value of number of oranges.

number of apples x = 10 - y

⇒ x = 10 - 3

⇒ x = 7

This is the value of number of apples.
