Heather had to collect insects for her biology project. She was able to collect 225 total insects. She collected 8 times as many insects that could fly as insects that couldn't fly. How many flying insects did she catch for her project?

200 flying insects she catch for her project .

Explanation:

We have , Heather had to collect insects for her biology project. She was able to collect 225 total insects. She collected 8 times as many insects that could fly as insects that couldn't fly. That means insects ratio of non-fly to fly is 1:8 .

There are a total of 225 insects , and for every one non fly insect there are 8 fly insects , Let x be the number of insects that can't fly so:


x + 8x = 225


x + 8x = 225


9x = 225


(9)/(9)x = (225)/(9)


x = (225)/(9)


x = 25

So , Number of fly insects = 8x = 8(25) = 200 . ∴ 200 flying insects she catch for her project .
