Atomic number of oxygen shows the total number of protons in it

now we can say that for neutral condition of oxygen atom we have

number of electrons = 8

number of protons = 8

Now if the neutral atom add up by two more electrons then

total number of electrons in it = 8 + 2 = 10

total number of protons = 8

so here net charge of the oxygen atom is NEGATIVE
