Britain had took the region over until 1917, before initiating the Balfour Declaration. But, the Israelis had not been internationally recognized as a country until May 1948, when the UN declared Israel as an independent country. Just to add, the holocaust had led many jews to needing a place for themselves, due to the "Final Solution" being initatied by Adolf Hitler during WWII.
