Explanation:

Two fractions here have the same denominator, n - 6, but the third term (3) does not. Finding and working with the LCD makes this problem solving much easier. Multiply that 3 by (n - 6) and then divide it by (n - 6). Then all three terms have the same denominator, and so we can cross out the denominator (n - 6):

n^2 + 6n + 5 - n^2 - 7 - 12 = 3n - 28

Combining like terms, we get:

3n - 2 = -35, or 3n = -33. Thus, n = -33/3, or n = -11
