Answer:

x=4

Explanation:

5x+2=22

I want to make x the subject

so I have to eliminate the constant which is 2

so to get rid of that you have to make it negative

so once you've wrote the the equation and make the constant negative you also do the same thing on the other side

so the coefficient is still there with the variable x

(5x) you still want to make x the subject but 5 and x are multiplying so you have to do the opposite by dividing

5x/5=20/5 which you divided each side by 5 which leaves

x=4

\mathsf{Equation\ \#1: 5x+2=22}

\mathsf{5x+2=22}\\\mathsf{\bf{SUBTRACT}}\mathsf{\ by\ 2\ on\ your\ sides}\\\mathsf{5x+2-2=22-2}\\\mathsf{Cancel\ out: 2-2\ because\ it\ equals\ 0}\\\mathsf{Keep: 22-2\ because\ it\ helps\ solve\ for\ x}\\\mathsf{22-2=20}\\\mathsf{5x=20}\\\mathsf{\bf{DIVIDE\ }}\mathsf{by\ 5\ on\ your\ sides}\\\mathsf{(5x)/(5)=(20)/(5)}\\\\\mathsf{Cancel\ out:(5x)/(5)\ because\ it\ gives\ you\ 1}\\\\\mathsf{Keep: (20)/(5)\ because\ it\ gives\ us\ x}\\\\\mathsf{(20)/(5)=4}

\mathsf{Equation\#2:2x+5=12}

\mathsf{2x+5=12}\\\mathsf{\bf{SUBTRACT\ }}\mathsf{both\ of\ your\ sides\ by\ 5}\\\mathsf{2x+5-5=12-5}\\\mathsf{Cancel\ out: 5-5\ because\ it\ equals\ to\ 0}\\\mathsf{Keep: 12-5\ because\ it\ helps\ solve\ for\ x}\\\mathsf{12-5=7}\\\mathsf{2x=7}\\\mathsf{\bf{DIVIDE\ }}\mathsf{both\ sides\ by\ 2}\\\mathsf{(2x)/(2)=(7)/(2)}\\\\\mathsf{Cancel\ out: (2x)/(2)\ because\ it\ gives\ you\ \ 1}\\\\\mathsf{Keep: (7)/(2)\ because\ it\ is\ x}

\boxed{\boxed{\bf{Answer: \boxed{\mathsf{\bf{x=(7)/(2)}}}}}}\checkmark
