Answer:

the area is 17 square units

Explanation:

separate the figure into three shapes, as shown in the picture attached.

now you have a figure with the side lengths 2 by 3, and an area of 6

a figure with the side lengths 5 by 2, and an area of 10

and a figure with the side lengths 1 by 1, and an area of 1

add the three areas (6 + 10 + 1) and you'll get your total area, 17
