Answer:

x = 3 and y = -1/2

Explanation:

5x + 2y = 14

5x = 14 - 2y

x = (14 - 2y)/5 equation(i)

2x - 4y = 8

substitute the value of x

2(14 - 2y)/5 - 4y = 8

(28 - 4y)/5 - 4y = 8

28 - 4y - 20y = 40

-24y = 40 - 28

y = 12/-24

y = -1/2

now substitute the value of y in equation (i)

x = (14 - 2y)/5

=(14 - 2*-1/2)/5

=(14 + 1)/5

=15/5

=3
