1. Ashley and Emma are reading the same article. Ashley is on page 1 of

the article, but she can read a page every minute. Emma is already on

page 5, but reads a page every three minutes.

C. How many minutes does it take before Ashley and Emma have

read the same amount?

Explanation:

Let in 't' minutes Ashley and Emma will read the same amount of pages.

If Ashley can read one page in a minute then she can read the number of pages in t minutes = 1×t =t

If she starts from page 1 then after time 't' she will be at the page = (t + 1)

Similarly, if Emma takes 3 minutes to read the amount of pages = 1

Then she can read amount of pages in t minutes =
(t)/(3)

If Emma starts from page 5 then after t minutes she will be at the page =
((t)/(3)+5)

If both have read the same amount of pages then,


(t+1)=(t)/(3)+5


t-(t)/(3)=5-1


(2t)/(3)=4

t = 6 minutes

Therefore, it will take 6 minutes by Ashley and Emma to read the same amount of pages.
