so,

xy = 1000 ...........................................(1)

and,

(x+5) (y-10) = 1000..............................(2)

Solving,

(x+5) (
`(1000)/(x)` -10)= 1000

or, (x+5) (
`(1000-10x)/(x)`) = 1000

or, (x+5) (1000-10x) = 1000x

or, x= 20

And,

y = 50

Hence there were 20 people when the amount was distributed.
