Answer:

1(1)/(4) \: or \: 1.25

Explanation:

convert 1 3/4 into improper fraction: 7/4

we got this from 4 × 1 = 4, then 4 + 3 = 7

the denominator stays the same

we need to subtract the amount that he has left from

the total amount:

make the number 3 have the same denominator as 7/4

3 - (7)/(4) = (3)/(1) - (7)/(4) = (4 * 3)/(1 * 4) - (7)/(4) = (12)/(4) - (7)/(4) = (5)/(4)

convert 5/4 into a mixed number:

the numerator has to be the same, so how many lots of 4 can go into 5 without a remainder? it is 1

4 × 1 = 4

1 is left over, so the numerator is 1

4 + 1 = 5

1 (1)/(4)
