Billy, Goat and Gruff shared some sweets in the ratio 4:5:6
Gruff got 18 more sweets than Billy.
Work out the total number of sweets they shared.

Explanation:

Given the ratio of sweets

4 : 5 : 6 = 4x : 5x : 6x ( where x is a multiplier ), then

6x = 4x + 18 ( Gruff has 18 more than Billy )

Subtract 4x from both sides

2x = 18 ( divide both sides by 2 )

x = 9

Thus number of sweets to each individual

Billy → 4x = 4 × 9 = 36

Goat → 5x = 5 × 9 = 45

Gruff → 6x = 6 × 9 = 54

Total number of sweets = 4x + 5x + 6x = 15x = 15 × 9 = 135
