Explanation:

x+2y=6 -----------(1)

x+y=5 ------------(2)

Using elimination method subtract (2) from (1)

x+2y-(x+y)=6-5

x+2y-x-y=1

2y-y=1

y=1

Now putting y in eq (1)

x+2(1)=6

x+2=6

x=6-2

x=4
