Step 1 : rearrange according to like terms

-9x + x = 17 - 1

( don't forget that the sign always change on crossing an equals to, either + to - or - to +

-9x + x (also means 9 - 1 but only carries a negative sign)

= - 8x = 16

Dividing both sides by -8 to get the value of x

-8x / 8 = 16 /- 8

x = 16/ -8

x = -2
