For this case we must solve the following linear equation:

5-6x = 8x + 17

Adding
6x to both sides of the equation we have:

5 = 8x + 6x + 17\\5 = 14x + 17

Subtracting 17 from both sides of the equation:

5-17 = 14x

Different signs are subtracted and the major sign is placed:

-12 = 14x

We divide by 14 on both sides of the equation:

x = - \frac {12} {14}\\x = - \frac {6} {7}

Answer:

x = - \frac {6} {7}
