An embankment is to be constructed at a 10% moisture content. Material will be placed at the rate of 250 ccy/hr. The specified dry weight of the compacted fill is 2,850 lb/cy. How many gallons of water must be supplied each hour to increase the moisture content of the material from 5 to 10% by weight

Answer:

water required = 4266.47 gallon/hour

Step-by-step explanation:

given data

moisture content = 10 %

rate = 250 ccy/hr

dry weight rd = 2,850 lb/cy

solution

we get here water required that is

water required = rb for 10 % moisture content - rb for 5 % moisture content ..........1

here

rb for 5 % moisture content = 2850 × (1+0.05)

rb for 5 % moisture content = 2992.5 lb/cy

rb for 10 % moisture content = 2850 × (1+0.10)

rb for 10 % moisture content = 3135 lb/cy

put here value in equation 1 we get

water required = 3135 - 2992.5

water required = 142.5 lb/cy

so

water required in 1 hour = 250 × 125

water required in 1 hour = 35625 lb

water required =
(35625)/(8.35) gallon

water required = 4266.47 gallon/hour
