The linear (geometric or regular) perspective is based on the natural law that by moving away from the observer, the characters decrease in proportion to distances in a straight line, linearly - and all disappear at one and the same point - endlessly (vanishing point, punto di fugue). The discovery of a linear perspective is attributed to architect Filipp Brunelleschi (1377 - 1446). This perspective is also called mathematical and illusionary because it creates an authentic impression of 3D space (examples: the Massaccio "Holy Trinity", Piero della Francesca "Whipping Christ", etc.), and has been used in sculpture and architecture (false niches).
