Types of technology are used to study the ocean floor
Echo sounding is actually the main tool used by scientists to map the seafloor. The method, first used in the early 20th century by German scientists, utilizes sound waves bounced off the bottom of the ocean.
Just like a flashlight beam as water depths exceed 3 000 meters the sound cone can concentrate on a relatively narrow area in areas where the ocean is shallow or spread over the size of a soccer field.
Echo sounders use specific sound frequencies to discover various things about the seafloor typically scientists use echo sounders which transmit sound at 12 kilohertz khz to determine how far down the seafloor lies.
