Astronomers want to make maps of the sky showing sources of X-rays or gamma rays. Explain why those X-rays and gamma rays must be observed from above Earth’s atmosphere.

Answer:

Astronomers place telescopes above to observe radiation from those parts of the electromagnetic spectrum for which the atmosphere would normally absorb or significantly scatter that radiation. This includes UV, X-ray, gamma ray, and infrared.
