A bakery sells white loaves and brown loaves.

One week, the ratio of the number of white loaves sold to the number of brown loaves
sold was 4:5
The bakery sold a total of 1584 loaves that week.
Work out how many brown loaves they sold.

880 brown loaves

Explanation:

Create a ratio of brown loaves to total loaves by adding the the current ratio, 4:5 together.

4 + 5 = 9.

Now create the new ration of brown loaves to total loaves.

5:9

Next make a proportion using brown (numerator) to total (denominator).

Then cross multiply and divide.


(5)/(9) = (b)/(1584)


9b = 7920\\(9b)/(9) =(7920)/(9) \\b=880
