Sandburg through his poem "Chicago" tries to poetically express the life of Chicago during the early 20th century. His expression can be testimonied through delving into the history of Chicago during the 20th century.

Step-by-step explanation:

Chicago has been a very lively and dynamic city throughout the 19th century and afterwards. During the mid 20th century Chicago gained the distinction of being a specialised metropolis town and thereafter it proceeded on its glide to fame. However, the Great fire did try to dent its image but the city showed immense strength of resilience and was quickly re-built.

Sandburg in his poem "Chicago" address different aspects of Chicago like its people, lanes, city life etc. He uses the figures of speech such as personification when he uses "hog butcher" for it and metaphor in several instances.
