Esmeralda bought 12.22 worth of 43 cent stamps and 81 cent stamps. The number of 81 cent stamps was 14 less than the number of 43 cent stamps. Solve the equation 0.43 s + 0.81 ( s − 14 ) = 12.22 for s, to find the number of 43 cent stamps Esmeralda bought.

Answer:

The number of 43 cent stamps Esmeralda bought is 19.

Explanation:

Given:

Esmeralda bought 12.22 worth of 43 cent stamps and 81 cent stamps. The number of 81 cent stamps was 14 less than the number of 43 cent stamps.

Now, to solve the equation 0.43 s + 0.81 ( s − 14 ) = 12.22 for s and to find the number of 43 cent stamps.

Let the number of 43 cent stamps be
s.

And, the number of 81 cent stamps be
s-14.

So, to solve equation for
s.

0.43 s + 0.81 ( s -14 ) = 12.22

0.43s+0.81s-11.34=12.22

1.24s-11.34=12.22

Adding both sides by 11.34 we get:

1.24s=23.56

Dividing both sides by 1.24 we get:

s=19.

The number of 43 cent stamps = 19.

Therefore, the number of 43 cent stamps Esmeralda bought is 19.
