Answer:

The distance travels in going east is 48 miles.

Explanation:

Speed of ship while traveling in east = 12 miles/hour.

Speed of ship while travelling in south = 18 miles/hour.

The total distance covered by ship = 156 miles.

The total time taken by ship to cover 156 miles = 10 hours.

Let the distance traveled by ship in east = ' x ' miles.

So the distance covered by ship in south = ( 156 - x ) miles.

Let the time taken by ship to cover ' x ' miles in east is ' t ' hour.

So the time taken by ship to cover " 156 - x " miles = " 10 - t " hour.

We know the formula,

time = (distance)/(speed)

t + ( 10 - t ) = 10 hour.

(x)/(12) +(156 - x)/(18) = 10

(3x + 312 - 2x)/(36) = 10

x + 312 = 360

x = 48 miles.

So the distance travels in going east is 48 miles.
