Box A has 4 times as many sweets as box B and thrice as many sweets as box C. If there were 38 sweets in the 3 boxes, how many sweets were in box A?

Explanation:

A is 4 times that of B ie

A = 4B (1)

A is also 3 times that of C ie

A = 3C (2)

From equation 1,

B = A/4

From equation 2,

C = A/3

But the there are 38 sweets in the 3 boxes i.e

A + B + C = 38

A + A/4 + A/3 = 38

Multiply through by 12 to express in linear form

12A + 3A + 4A = 456

19A = 456

Dive both side by 19

A = 456/19

A = 24
