First, Joe has 1/4 of an acre of land and 3 different types of plants he wants to plant for equal distance within that area. To find out the land he will use for each type of vegetable you must divide 1/4 by 3

The simplest way to divide fractions is to use cross multiplication

_ x _ = _

4 3 12

Therefore 1/12 of an acre is the amount of land he will use for each type of vegetable.

To check this just multiply 1/12 by 3 giving you 3/12 which can be simplified back into 1/4
