You have 3 books that are 1/2 inch thick, 4 books that are 1/6 inch thick, and 5 books that are 1/8 inch think. What is the total width of the books?

1) 2 and 19/24

2) 14 (2 1/2) acres can be made.

3) 6 19/40 inches of ribbon left

Explanation:

1) 2 19/24

First, add up your values

3 books that are 1/2 inch thick : 1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2 = 3/2

4 books that are 1/6 inch thick: 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 = 4/6 = 2/3

5 books that are 8 inch thick: 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 5/8

Now we can add our fractions:

3/2 + 2/3 + 5/8

But.. how? Our denominators are NOT equal! All, you have to do if find the LCD, or Lowest Common Denominator. What are 2, 3, and 8 ALL dividable by? 24!

3/2 = 36/24

2/3 = 16/24

15/8 = 10/24

36/24 + 16/24 + 10/24 = 67/24

Now simplify!

62/24 = 2 19/24

2) 14 (2 1/2) acres can be made.

What we need to do id divide 35 acres by 2 1/2! To do this, make 35 a fraction, by putting it over 1, and make 2 1/2 an improper fraction.

35/1 divided by 5/2 = ?

Reverse the fraction, and just multiply across.

35/1 x 2/5 = 70/5 = 14

3) 6 19/40 of ribbon left

Simply subtract 2/5 from 6 7/8! To do this, turn 6 7/8 into an improper function, and find the LCD.

55/8 - 2/5 = ?

LCD = 40

275/40 - 16/40 = 259/40 = 6 19/40

104/48 + 30/48 = 134/8

134/8 = 67/4 = 33.5/2 = 16 1.5/2 = 16.75 inches thick
